Cheryl L. Thomas is Vice President of Human Resources for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), a national federation of 37 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. The Blue System is the nation's largest health insurer of nearly 100 million – one-in-three of all Americans. It is the largest single processor of Medicare claims in the nation, and holds the world's largest privately underwritten health insurance contract – the nearly 5.2-million-member Federal Employee Program® (FEP).
Thomas leads the human resources function for BCBSA and is accountable for the strategic direction and management of employee benefits, compensation and reward programs, employee relations, training and development and employment. Prior to joining BCBSA, Thomas held executive leadership roles in human resources and administration within the healthcare, insurance and financial services industries.
In her career of more than 30 years, Thomas has held global leadership roles and has worked with companies to develop effective strategies to address human resources needs. Her experience has spanned large and small enterprises, working at all levels through various business transformations.
She serves on the Board of Directors for Lincoln Lutheran of Racine and is on the Executive Committee. Among other civic leadership roles, Thomas has served on boards of The Clara Abbott Foundation and the Spirit of Women Foundation.
Thomas earned her MBA and bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Human Services at Washington University in St. Louis. She is completing her Ph.D. with Fielding Graduate Institute in Human and Organizational Development.
