Paul Gerrard serves as Vice President of Strategic Communications for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), a national federation of 38 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. The Blue System is the nation's largest health insurer covering 100 million people – one-in-three of all Americans. It is the largest single processor of Medicare claims in the nation, and holds the world's largest privately underwritten health insurance contract – the 5.2 million-member Federal Employee Program (FEP).
Gerrard is responsible for BCBSA’s marketing and communications functions, including creative services, digital and social media, media relations and strategic and crisis communications support to BCBS companies’ executives nationwide. In addition, Gerrard oversees BCBSA’s national corporate social responsibility efforts.
With more than 25 years experience in public relations and marketing communications, Gerrard joined BCBSA from Humana Inc., where he most recently served as Director of Corporate Affairs, overseeing both internal and external communications. Also, he served as Chairman of the Corporate Social Responsibility Council which directed Humana’s corporate citizenship efforts. Before that, he was Humana’s Director of Commercial Marketing, responsible for building a successful partnership between the sales and marketing functions.
Prior to his tenure at Humana Inc., Gerrard was president and a partner of Public Relations Network, where he led an award-winning team which developed reputations, resolved issues and built brands for leading companies such as McDonald’s Restaurants and Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
A native of the United Kingdom, Gerrard has a BA from the University of Kent and a post-graduate diploma from the London South Bank University.
