Sudhama Gopalan, Ph.Dis Vice President, Strategy for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), a national federation of 37 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. The Blue System is the nation's largest health insurer of nearly 100 million – one-in-three of all Americans. It is the largest single processor of Medicare claims in the nation, and holds the world's largest privately underwritten health insurance contract – the nearly 5.2-million-member Federal Employee Program® (FEP).
Dr. Gopalan is responsible for leading strategic initiatives for BCBSA and BCBS companies on business segment strategies, competitive assessments and market positioning to optimize the performance of BCBS companies and strengthen the Blue Brands. He is also responsible for oversight of strategic consulting services, the market intelligence function and economic assessment of proposed legislative or regulatory policies.
Dr. Gopalan has brought products to market and led businesses in the manufacturing and service sectors for the past 18 years. He came to BCBSA from Aetna, where – as Vice President of Product Strategy and Marketing Analytics – he had responsibility for product development, product management, analytical marketing, market insights and consumer innovation.
Prior to Aetna, Dr. Gopalan served as Vice President of Marketing Strategy at HSBC, a leading global bank. While there, he had responsibility for profit and loss and business development for credit card portfolios as well as customer acquisition, product development and marketing strategy in the mortgage business.
Dr. Gopalan also worked in strategy management consulting at Booz and Company, where he specialized in growth strategies and turnarounds for global clients in the automotive and industrial sectors. He started his career in product development with Sherwin Williams, a global coatings company.
Dr. Gopalan received a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and an MBA with honors from the University of Chicago. He also earned a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan.
