Investing in America's Health
Throughout our 80-year history, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies all across the country have been leaders in supporting local and national programs to improve the health and well-being of all Americans. Giving back to their communities is a hallmark of the 39 Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. Through corporate giving programs and public and private foundations, they are investing in health and wellness initiatives to improve healthcare quality and affordability — and to expand access to healthcare to more people. They also contribute to cultural institutions and programs that improve the quality of life.
In 2009, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association issued Investing in America's Health detailing corporate and foundation giving by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies, which totaled more than $195 million in 2007.
Investing in America's Health provides a snapshot of the significant impact Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are making in small towns, major cities and rural communities coast-to-coast, including:
- Reducing hospital-acquired infections in California by 3.2%, resulting in 4,641 fewer hospital days
- Successfully encouraging more than 2,000 African-Americans visiting barber shops and hair salons in Baltimore to be screened for heart disease
- Increasing the fill rate for generic drugs in upstate New York from 55.6% to 68.4%, saving a projected $700 million
- Decreasing premature births to 8.2%, and the rate of infant deaths to less than one percent, in Memphis, the American city with the highest infant mortality rate
