Celebrating National Bike Month in Our Local Communities

Posted by Madeleine Lovette

Did you know that May is National Bike Month?

To celebrate this month-long tribute to biking and its benefits, we’ve decided to share some of the stories from our “Like It to Bike It” sweepstakes winners!

In advance of National Bike Month, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) hosted a “Like it to Bike It” Facebook contest to encourage children and their families to incorporate fitness, like biking and other activities, into their daily lifestyles.  The contest gave away 12’’ youth bikes and helmets to three lucky winners who “liked” the BCBSA Facebook page during the month of March. Winners were announced on April 23rd.

For “Like It to Bike It” winner Lacey Burd, the contest was an opportunity to win a bike for her daughter, Averey, and make fitness more of a priority for her family.

“We don't have a whole lot of money, so when I saw the chance to win Averey a bike, I had to enter,” said Lacey.  “Fitness used to be a huge part of my family's lifestyle, but we have noticed that we don't make as big of an effort as we used to. Once the weather warms up, we have vowed to spend more time outside and now we can go for bike rides!”

Sweepstakes winner, Liz Walker of North Carolina, also entered the contest to win a bike for her daughter.

“My family has decided to do some healthier things this year,” said Liz.  “I received a new bike in September for my birthday and now my daughter and I have something we can do together that’s fun and healthy.”

During the “Like It to Bike It” sweepstakes, the BCBSA Facebook page educated followers on the physical and mental health benefits of biking and similar aerobic activities. Regular exercise is especially important for children as studies show it can help them perform better in school and decrease their chances of being overweight as adults.

Biking can also:

  • Strengthen your immune system
  • Lower your carbon footprint
  • Help prevent diseases such as heart disease and diabetes
  • Help relieve depression and anxiety

"As an insurer to 1 in 3 Americans, it is just as much our responsibility to provide Blue Cross and Blue Shield members with the proper tools and education to stay well as it is to provide them with quality healthcare coverage," said Scott P. Serota, BCBSA president and CEO.  "Increasing awareness about the benefits of daily exercise, like biking, for children and their families can help foster happier and healthier communities."

Congratulations to our winners and happy Bike Month from BCBSA!
