Focus: To identify the reasons underlying the recent growth in inpatient hospital spending.
Study Design: Literature review.
Results: The major cost drivers identified from a secondary review of the literature are as follows:
- Workforce shortage
- Retreat from managed care
- Shifting hospital business directions
- New technology
Underlying factors such as legislation, quality of care, limited access to other types of healthcare, pressures on the safety net, population aging, and increasing prevalence of chronic illness were found to influence the factors above and healthcare spending in general.
