BCBSA Names Greg Pawlson Executive Director Of Quality Innovations

July 7, 2011

WASHINGTON – The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) today announced that Greg Pawlson, MD, MPH, FACP, a former executive vice president at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), has joined BCBSA's Washington office as Executive Director of Quality Innovations.

In this newly created position, Pawlson will draw upon his experience as a clinical health services researcher and expert on healthcare quality to promote key safety and quality initiatives developed by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies that can be replicated to help transform the healthcare system.

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are committed to better health and better healthcare value.  We're working with doctors and hospitals to develop new ways to improve the quality of care and attack rising healthcare costs within the system for our members," said Alissa Fox, senior vice president for policy and regulation at BCBSA.  "Greg brings a wealth of clinical experience and excellent relationships in the medical community that will be an invaluable asset in working with other healthcare organizations and government leaders to transform healthcare delivery and improve safety and quality."

At NCQA since 2000, Pawlson was a member of the leadership team responsible for oversight of all activities related to research and analysis, development of performance measurement measures related to most major diseases, and more recently measures related to overuse, resource use and cost.

"I am excited to join the Association in this new role which will draw upon and highlight the Blues' long history and recent efforts to help transform the healthcare system through collaborations that improve safety, quality and the overall value of care in communities nationwide," said Pawlson.

Pawlson also served as NCQA's primary liaison to physician specialty societies and medical boards including the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Board of Internal Medicine.  He currently serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Managed Care, the American Journal of Medical Quality and is a board member of the American Board of Medical Quality.

Pawlson previously served as senior associate vice president for health affairs and medical director for quality and utilization management for the faculty practice at The George Washington University Medical Center.  He has also served as chairman of the university's Department of Health Care Sciences and director of the Institute for Health Policy, Outcomes and Human Values.
