In our commitment to help prevent childhood obesity, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is expanding its Be Healthy School Grant Program. For the 2013-2014 school year, Blue Cross will more than double the available grant money to $250,000 and award grants up to $10,000 to 25 schools across the state who enroll students in grades K through six. This program expansion is due to the success of this school year’s grant program with Blue Cross proudly awarding grants totaling $67,000 to eight schools and over 1900 students in Alabama.

Hundreds of uninsured individuals are referred each year to the Schuylkill Alliance for Health Care Access, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the availability of and access to primary and preventive medical, dental and behavioral services for the residents of Schuylkill County. An increasing number of those individuals are also unemployed and have chronic conditions. Through a $15,000 grant from Highmark Blue Shield, the Schuylkill Alliance's safety net program, Health Care Access, will expand services so those individuals can stay on a health maintenance program and remain employable while on the path to find employment.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) today launched a statewide education and outreach initiative targeting Texas' uninsured residents. The Be Covered Texas campaign, which will be fully funded by BCBSTX and supported by various community and civic groups, will focus on helping the state’s uninsured population understand how the new health care law impacts them and what steps they need to take to gain access to individual health insurance. The enrollment period for uninsured Texans opens in October, with health care plans beginning in January 2014.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) today announced the selection of three organizations to conduct comprehensive evaluations of the company’s Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) program. A joint team from Harvard University, Brandeis University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was selected, along with teams from George Mason University and Westat. The groups will conduct both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the PCMH program.
