Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of Kansas City Announces Its Participation On The Health Insurance Marketplace

As the only local not-for-profit health insurance company in the KC area, the company plans to be the provider of choice for those seeking health insurance coverage under the ACA.

September 12, 2013

KANSAS CITYBlue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) announced today that it will participate fully by offering a wide variety of products on the new Health Insurance Marketplace, going live on October 1.

“As the only not-for-profit health insurance company in the Kansas City area, we are taking this opportunity to reaffirm our mission and long-standing commitment to the community. We see the Health Insurance Marketplace as a tool to help us reach people who want an affordable health insurance plan from a local company they can trust to guide them through a complicated process,” said David Gentile, President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue KC.

Approximately 300,000 uninsured Kansas Citians stand to benefit from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the form of increased access to health insurance and financial assistance to help pay for coverage. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the timeline and application process.

For these reasons, Blue KC has embarked on a far-reaching education campaign, geared to help those who need it most. Web tools, community outreach, pamphlets and educational materials are being used to ensure uninsured and underinsured people have the information they need to apply.

As has always been the case, Blue KC will continue to be a trusted resource to help guide consumers looking to find plans that meet their lifestyle and budget. Applicants have until March 31, 2014 to apply, but in order to take advantage of the January 1, 2014 implementation date and avoid any tax penalties, people who want to buy a Blue KC product will need to apply by December 15. Help is available at 1-800-645-8356 or BlueKC.com. Applicants can see approximately how much financial assistance they qualify for by using the Subsidy Calculator at KCHealthCareReform.org.

Blue KC is part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association which has 37 plans across the nation. Individuals in most states will have access to a Blue plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace or their state exchange. Currently, more than 100 million people choose a Blue plan for their health insurance needs.

The number of Blue KC products available on the Health Insurance Marketplace and an overview of what they include will be announced on September 24. Pricing will be announced on October 1. More information about the Affordable Care Act is available at KCHealthcareReform.org.
