Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of Louisiana Appoints Two

BATON ROUGE – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has appointed two new utilization management medical directors, Dr. Deirdre “Dee” Barfield and Dr. Stephen B. Walker.

Dr. Dee Barfield comes to Blue Cross from CHRISTUS Health in Irving, Texas, where she was chief medical officer of health plans and population health. Before that, she was chief medical officer, vice president of medical affairs, and director of women’s services at CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System in Shreveport. Barfield will be based in Blue Cross’ Shreveport Regional Office, where she will assist with utilization management and quality-related programs in that area.

Barfield received her Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport and her medical degree from the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Her internship was in internal medicine, and she completed a separate residency in pathology. She is board certified in both specialties.

Dr. Stephen Walker started his career in urgent care medicine and later founded a network of clinic services, Occupational Medical Center, which successfully merged with Concentra Health Services. Walker has held executive positions as associate health director for The DOW Chemical Company; chief medical officer for Client Network Services, Inc.; medical director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (commercial); Medicaid medical director for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals; medical director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Tennessee (Medicare Advantage); and clinical regional medical director for United Healthcare (commercial). 

Walker received his medical doctorate and internal medicine internship from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans; occupational environmental medicine residency training from Emory University School of Medicine; MPH from Medical College of Wisconsin; MBA from LSU; and MS (biotechnology) from Johns Hopkins University. He also received medical post-graduate training in clinical genetics from Yale University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in occupational medicine (American College of Preventive Medicine). He was recognized in 2012 with America’s Health Insurance Plans’ Certified Healthcare Insurance Executive (CHIE) designation.

Walker currently serves on the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) U.S. Physician Committee and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Clinical Informatics Subspecialty Board Exam Preparation Writing Committee.
