September 25, 2012

PROVIDENCE – As part of its ongoing dedication to serving the needs of its Rhode Island community, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (Blue Cross) will hold its first company-wide day of community service, Blue across Rhode Island, on Thursday, September 27, 2012.  More than 700 employees will contribute in excess of 3,200 volunteer hours in a single day, supporting more than twenty Rhode Island nonprofits in efforts to help make a special impact within our communities.

“As a local nonprofit organization, Blue Cross strives to be a good steward of the resources entrusted to us and Blue across Rhode Island further demonstrates our commitment to the community, which has always been at the heart of our corporate culture,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and chief executive officer for Blue Cross.  “I am grateful for our associates who are volunteering, as well as for the agencies who serve a critical role in Rhode Island as they help those in need and make our community a better place to live.”

Blue across Rhode Island is a new addition to Blue Cross’ long-standing BlueAngel Community Outreach Program, which includes employee volunteerism and charitable giving with a focus on improving access to and quality of healthcare services in Rhode Island.  Highlights of the BlueAngel Community Outreach Program include:

  • The BlueAngel Community Health Grant program, which has contributed over $1,909,000 to 43 organizations and has touched the lives of 191,000 Rhode Islanders since 2002
  • 3,500 total employee volunteer hours at 27 organizations in 2011
  • $1.1 million in charitable contributions in 2011
  • Approximately $50,000 in-kind donations annually

As part of Blue across Rhode Island, Blue Cross volunteers will provide service to community organizations from North Kingstown to Central Falls, partaking in various volunteer projects including assembling children’s nutrition bags, landscaping, painting and supervising wellness screenings for the uninsured.

Peter Andruszkiewicz, along with the entire Blue Cross leadership team, will participate in this special day.  Peter will join employees and spend the morning at the Highlander Charter School in Providence where he will help staff a health fair for students and teachers.  In the afternoon, Peter will travel across the state, visiting many of our other Blue across Rhode Island project sites, including:
