Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of Vermont Files Rates For New Vermont Health Connect

April 1, 2013

BERLIN – Rates filed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont (BCBSVT) assure Vermonters will have a range of health insurance options at prices that are comparable to those they pay today when they are required to purchase their health benefits through Vermont Health Connect, the state’s new health benefits exchange.

The rate filing was the first step in a process through which rates will be established for Vermont Health Connect. Individuals and small businesses will purchase their health benefits through Vermont Health Connect this fall, for coverage beginning in 2014.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont, the state’s only Vermont-based health insurance company, provides coverage for the majority of Vermonter s and Vermont businesses which will be required to purchase their health benefits through Vermont Health Connect.

BCBSVT President and CEO Don George said the company’s rate filing, which was submitted last week to Vermont’s Department of Financial Regulation and made public today, establishes rates for most Vermonters that are comparable to those they pay today. This assures customers and members will have the ability to preserve the security of their BCBSVT coverage across the country and the globe, as well as the high levels of group and member service for which our company is known.

“We understand the process of establishing the products and rates that will be offered through Vermont Health Connect is in its preliminary stage, and changes are likely before products are finalized, qualified health plans are selected and rates are approved,” he said.

“But it is now clear that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont will have a full suite of products at comparable prices within each of the cost-sharing categories that will be offered on Vermont Health Connect. Indeed, BCBSVT has even requested approval to offer additional options with strong health and wellness incentives.”

George said BCBSVT, an independent, non-profit company located in central Vermont, will open a retail outlet in South Burlington next month as part of a historic outreach and support initiative to assist Vermonters and Vermont businesses as they transition to the Exchange. He said the effort includes redeployment of more than 10 percent of the company’s staff to assist customers and members. BCBSVT is also revamping its internet website and organizing meetings with individuals and businesses across the state.

“Our new advertising program makes this promise: We’ll see you through,” said George. “To make good on that promise, we have a strong program in place to assist our customers, members and other interested Vermonters in understanding the requirements of state and federal health care reforms and the decisions that they will need to make as they evaluate options for 2014. Importantly, we are prepared to help identify the products and/or prices that are closest to customers’ current coverage and assist their transition to the Exchange.”
