Blue Cross Of Northeastern Pennsylvania Announces Lower Rates For Individual Members Nearly 7,000 Members Will Benefit

May 13, 2013

WILKES-BARRE – Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA) has reduced premium rates for nearly 7,000 BlueCare Direct individual members.  The premium rate reductions became effective on May 1 and will range from 7 percent to 17 percent.

Nearly all current BlueCare Direct members - and new members who enroll before December 31, 2013 - will benefit from the new, lower premium rates.  Some members may not see a rate reduction, but will benefit from premium rates that will remain the same, with no increase, through December 2014.

"This is great news for our members and individual consumers in our service area who are looking for coverage," said A. Paul Holdren, Senior Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for BCNEPA.  "It is unusual in this day and age to see costs going down, yet we were able to reduce or hold premium rates for BlueCare Direct members because overall, medical care costs for these members have been lower than expected.  This validates the effectiveness of the tools we have in place to help manage the cost of care and to help members make healthier lifestyle choices."

Known as Blue Health Solutions, those tools include health and lifestyle management programs that offer personalized support and education - such as tobacco cessation, weight management and proper nutrition - for members who are interested in making positive lifestyle changes.

The Blue Health Solutions team of health coaches - who are experienced health care professionals such as registered nurses and registered dietitians - also provides support and information to members with chronic illnesses to help improve their health and better manage their condition.

"All of our members, including BlueCare Direct members, have access to these programs," said Holdren.  "When put into practice, the results are a healthier population and lower health care costs, and that benefits our entire region."
