Blue Cross & Blue Shield Of Rhode Island Accepting Applications For 2013 Community Health Grant Program

Grants help extend care to uninsured and vulnerable populations in Rhode Island

June 29, 2012

PROVIDENCE– Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) announced today that it is accepting applications for its 2013 BlueAngel Community Health Grant  (BACHG) program.  This annual program grants funds to nonprofit organizations for initiatives that address access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, and health education, primarily to the uninsured and/or under-insured in Rhode Island.

“Our BACHG program gives us the opportunity to partner with community-based agencies that provide programs aimed at improving the health of those who most need it in our state,” said Michele Lederberg, executive vice president for BCBSRI.  “We believe all Rhode Islanders deserve access to high-quality and affordable healthcare, and this program allows us to extend our reach beyond our members in order to break down the barriers to healthcare access created by cost, culture, miscommunication, system structure, and lack of education.”

The BACHG program will allocate grants to a variety of organizations, including several from the 2012 recipients that will receive funding for a second year, to provide new or existing health-focused programs across Rhode Island.  To qualify, organizations must have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status.  For this year’s program, BCBSRI is particularly interested in Rhode Island-based organizations that play a role in the ever-expanding healthcare safety net and health and human service organizations, as they navigate new opportunities resulting from Rhode Island’s efforts to transform the healthcare delivery system.

Applicants can find a comprehensive list of eligibility requirements, grant program information, frequently asked questions, and the online letter of intent (LOI) form by visiting BCBSRI.com/about-us/community.  LOIs will only be accepted online, and the submission deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012.

BCBSRI accepts and reviews proposals for the BACHG program once a year.  Each LOI received is reviewed to determine compliance with eligibility and funding priorities.  BCBSRI will notify the selected applicants and invite submission of a full proposal approximately 30 days before the deadline.  Grant award winners are notified in December with funding to begin in January 2013.

In 2012, four organizations received BACHGs, including Community Health Innovations of Rhode Island (CHI-RI), Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island (EJLRI), Ready to Learn Providence (R2LP), and Wood River Health Services (WRHS).  Four organizations also were selected to receive transitional funding, including Providence Community Health Center (PCHC), Thundermist Community Health Center (TCHC), Youth in Action (YiA), and Dorcas Place.

The BACHG program was launched in 2002 and has touched the lives of more than 191,000 people in the state.  The program is a key component in BCBSRI’s vision of enhancing the quality of life for Rhode Islanders by increasing the quality of and access to healthcare services.  The BACHGs are made possible by the BCBSRI Community Health Fund, a corporate donor-advised fund of The Rhode Island Foundation.
