Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of Texas Commitments To Providing Free Immunizations To 27,000 Children
BCBSTX to Immunize 1 Millionth Child through Care Vans
August 29, 2012
Richardson, TEXAS – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) announced plans today to immunize approximately 27,000 children by the end of 2012. This renewed pledge during National Immunization Month further strengthens BCBSTX’s commitment to the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families program – a three-year initiative that pulls together local, state and national resources in an effort to make a significant impact on childhood health and wellness. Through the Caring for Children Foundation, BCBSTX has already immunized 20,000 kids across the state this year. And by the end of 2012, BCBSTX will have provided its one millionth immunization to Texas children.
“Too many kids get sick each year and some even die from vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, chief medical officer, BCBSTX. “Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is committed to helping our communities stay healthy and we’re proud to be the primary sponsor of the Caring for Children Foundation’s Care Vans. We plan to host many more clinics at schools, churches, restaurants, recreational parks, shopping centers, public housing, and community events with the goal of educating, preventing and managing disease within Texas’ underserved communities.”
The Care Vans are mobile health vans that provide preventive care to uninsured and medically underserved children. Available immunizations include all 14 nationally recommended childhood vaccines including chickenpox, pertussis, HPV, meningitis and more. The 10 Care Vans also receive support from the Texas Medical Association, Texas Medical Association Alliance and other organizations across the state. Beginning in June of 1997 through December 2011, the program has given 943,027 immunizations to 573,988 children.
