Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of Kansas City Is Helping Employees Walk To Better Health With National Walk@Lunch Day

Employees Join Tens of Thousands of Individuals Across the Country for this Eighth Annual National Health Initiative

April 29, 2014

KANSAS CITY – Tomorrow, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) employees will take a big step toward better health, joining walkers across the country in the eighth annual National Walk @ Lunch Day®. Last year, tens of thousands of walkers participated in events in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

During National Walk @ Lunch Day people are reminded to take time during their lunch break and start walking toward better health.  Because most people’s schedules are built around their workdays, National Walk @ Lunch Day is designed to fit into – not compete with – their daily routine.

“National Walk @ Lunch Day is an easy way for our employees to fit some exercise into their busy lives,” said David Gentile, President and Chief Executive Officer for Blue KC.  “The process is simple – just take a half hour to walk at lunch. Making this a habit can contribute to an individual’s health and the overall health of the nation.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates the cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is nearly $1,000 for every family in America, every year. Simply getting 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, at least five times a week has significant health benefits. Walking lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes, and improves the health of muscles, bones and joints.

National Walk@Lunch Day is a component of Walking Works®, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association physical activity program designed to help Americans live healthier lives and reduce unnecessary medical costs due to inactivity.  The Walking Works program was developed in partnership with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
