C. Everett Koop Recognizes BlueCross As Model Wellness Program

Employee wellness program recognized for efforts to improve employee health and reduce medical costs

CHATTANOOGA — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s well@work employee wellness program was recently awarded a C. Everett Koop National Health Award honorable mention by The Health Project.

BlueCross’ well@work employee wellness program captured The Health Project’s attention in part because of its 97 percent employee participation rate, comprehensive program design, facilities and policies that support health and wellness, and employee champions who encourage healthy behaviors among their peers.

“Hearing employees’ personal success stories about losing weight, getting off of medications, and generally improving their health is very rewarding,” said Ryan Picarella, manager of corporate wellness for BlueCross. “Earning an honorable mention of this caliber is an outstanding achievement for our program and validates our employees’ experiences as well as our corporate commitment to health and wellness.”

Onlife Health is a key partner in the BlueCross well@work program. In addition to providing an award-winning wellness portal experience, Onlife manages the health care company’s on-site fitness center and provides health coaching, online health assessments and other resources to help employees get and stay healthy. “We’re proud to play a role in a program that improves employee health and sets a high standard for employers across the state as we work to help Tennesseans accomplish their health goals,” said Jed Dodd, Onlife CEO.

Dr. C. Everett Koop, former Surgeon General of the United States and honorary chairperson of The Health Project, commented that this year’s awardees exemplify what employers can do to improve workers’ health, while at the same time saving money. “Every company in America should look at these examples of model programs that keep workers safe and healthy and at the same time save unnecessary health care spending for potentially preventable health conditions,” said Dr. Koop.
