June 15, 2012
BALTIMORE – CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) today announced it has received a $24 million Health Care Innovation Award from CMS. The grant will fund a three-year program designed to serve 25,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Maryland.
“We are pleased that our Total Care and Cost Improvement (TCCI) Program has been selected by CMS for a Health Care Innovation Award,” said CareFirst President and CEO Chet Burrell. “CMS has set a goal of delivering better care and lowering costs for those Americans served by public health programs such as Medicare. At the center of our TCCI program are the principles and components of the Patient-Centered Medical Home program that we have developed and put in place to serve CareFirst’s members. The award from CMS is further recognition of the promise of our program to improve care for those patients with the greatest health needs while taking steps to slow the growth of health care costs. We will get to work immediately to extend this program to serve a portion of the Medicare population in our community.”
