Delaware First Lady Carla Markell Joins Highmark Delaware In Celebrating “National Walk@Lunch Day”

American Heart Association names Highmark Delaware Platinum Fit Friendly award winner

April 23, 2013

WILMINGTON – Delaware first lady Carla Markell will lead employees of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware (Highmark Delaware) and several local companies on a walk to Rodney Square to celebrate “National Walk@Lunch Day” on Wednesday, April 24 at noon.

Highmark Delaware will join Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies across the country promoting employee and community wellness through the simple act of walking during lunch. The walk begins at the Highmark Delaware headquarters on Delaware Avenue and ends at Rodney Square with a wellness fair, live remote broadcast by WSTW and healthy snacks. The wellness fair, which is open to the public, continues until 2 p.m.

At the wellness fair, Stephanie Rhoads, executive director of the American Heart Association, will present Highmark Delaware with the Platinum Fit Friendly Award. This exclusive award recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees and work to create a culture of physical activity and health in the workplace. “Highmark Delaware knows the value of a healthy team. Winning the Fit Friendly Award is a wonderful recognition of our workplace wellness efforts,” said Highmark Delaware President Timothy J. Constantine.

Highmark Delaware provides annual biometric screenings and health risk assessments to all employees, and encourages participation in fitness programs with incentive-based programs. Employees have access to an onsite fitness center and a cafeteria that offers healthy breakfast and lunch options. Last year, Highmark Delaware employees participated in a 12-week walking program, which demonstrated the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle starting with walking 10,000 steps each day. Additionally, weekly onsite weight management classes and a weight loss contest were held for employees focused on losing weight to improve their health.

For members of its health benefits plans, Highmark Delaware designed health and wellness programs to engage members and encourage them to take control of their health. Health and wellness resources are also available on highmarkbcbsde.com.

“Today, it seems we are busier than ever, but we still need to incorporate healthy habits into our lifestyles,” said Peg Eitl, vice president of marketing and employee wellness chair of Highmark Delaware. “Taking a brisk 30-minute walk at lunch every day can have physical benefits, and it can help us mentally recharge as well. I look forward to seeing employees of Wilmington businesses at our ‘National Walk@Lunch Day’ wellness fair learning more about how to live a healthier lifestyle.”
