Free Body Composition Screenings From Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island

August 28, 2012

PROVIDENCE, RI – To help individuals better determine if they are leading a healthy lifestyle, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (Blue Cross) is offering two free body composition screenings during September.  The screenings will take place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, September 11,  from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Camp Street Ministries, 190 Camp Street, Providence
  • Wednesday, September 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the St. Edwards Wellness Center, 1001 Branch Avenue, Providence

A representative from United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island will also be present to help connect individuals with the information and services they need, confidentially and for free.  Whether you need to find daycare for your child, financial assistance, a mental health counselor, or if you need any other kind of community-based service in Rhode Island, 2-1-1 is available to help individuals and their families.

Body composition is the ratio of lean body mass to fat body mass.  Those with optimal body composition are typically healthier and feel better than those with a less-than-ideal ratio.  A certified health educator will be present at the screening to explain individual results and offer suggestions on how to improve and/or maintain a healthy body composition ratio.

It’s important to note that individuals who are exercising to lose weight may not be able to measure their progress from the scale alone.  Since muscle weighs more than fat, a person might gain muscle mass but not lose weight, which can be misleading and frustrating.  A body composition screening is the best way to determine if health goals are being achieved or if adjustments should be made to the person’s diet or exercise routine.

Please wear clothing that allows access to your bare upper arm for this 10-minute screening.  Registration is not required.
