Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield's "Healthy Weekend" Set To Kick Off On May 19
May 7, 2012
PITTSBURGH -- There's no better way to enjoy beautiful spring weather than to participate in some fun, outdoor events. Thanks to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, local families will have the opportunity to take advantage of a healthy weekend filled with outdoor activities.
"We are proud to support the Highmark 'Healthy Weekend' because it will give those living in our local communities the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of our city while participating in fun, healthy events," said Dan Onorato, Highmark executive vice president, chief external affairs and communications officer.
On Saturday, May 19, the Highmark "Healthy Weekend" will kick off with the annual Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community, which will benefit 70 local nonprofit organizations, at Stage AE on Pittsburgh's North Shore. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the walks in Pennsylvania, and in celebration of this milestone, Highmark recently announced a $1 million statewide fundraising goal. Participants will enjoy entertainment, prizes and the chance to walk with family and friends for a good cause.
Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m., with the 5K walk starting at 9 a.m. and the One-Mile Fun Walk at 9:15 a.m. To learn more about the participating organizations, register or make a donation, visit www.walkforahealthycommunity.org. Highmark underwrites the cost of the event, so 100 percent of the money raised by walkers is donated directly to the participating organizations.
Also on May 19, Highmark is the presenting sponsor of the Venture Outdoors Festival, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Point State Park. Family-friendly outdoor activities such as an obstacle course, climbing wall, fishing and yoga will be available.
To wrap up the weekend, on Sunday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., individuals will have the opportunity to take advantage of Highmark Wellness Day at the Carnegie Science Center, located on the North Shore. Highmark members can show their Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield ID card at the ticket counter and receive a 50 percent discount off general admission to all exhibits, including Highmark SportsWorks. The discount also applies to those covered under their Highmark policy.
