Highmark Delaware And Blue Rocks Tradition Supports YMCA Youth

Annual Ks for Kids program supports local organizations that promote good health among Delaware’s youth

August 28, 2012

Delaware - Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware (Highmark Delaware) will present the YMCA of Delaware Youth Wellness Centers (Youth Wellness Centers) with a $5,000 check, through this year‟s Ks for Kids grant program. The Youth Wellness Centers are designed for children 7-13 years of age who are not yet old enough to exercise in the standard YMCA fitness centers. The exercise equipment is child-sized and the Youth Wellness Centers are routinely staffed by YMCA employees.

“We encourage children to find exercises they enjoy — whether it‟s climbing a rock wall or participating in a virtual dodge ball game,” explained Edward Graney, Director, Youth Wellness Center — Brandywine Branch. “Our programs appeal to the „whole child‟ and focus on three areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The YMCA is working to help children establish healthy habits that will last a lifetime.”

Through Ks for Kids, Highmark Delaware donates $10 to a local community-based organization for every home game strikeout pitched by the Blue Rocks, up to $5,000.

“As a health benefits organization, we are committed to addressing the troubling trend of childhood obesity,” explained Timothy Constantine, Highmark Delaware President. “Our Ks for Kids donation will help to provide children with access to quality physical education programs and promote healthy lifestyles.”

To date, Highmark Delaware has contributed $35,000 to the Ks for Kids program, which is now in its seventh year.
