Highmark Website Updates Make Health Insurance More Understandable To Members

PITTSBURGH – Health insurance can be confusing, and it's no secret that many people are frustrated with what they believe are obstacles to managing and tracking their health coverage and spending. Highmark Inc. gets that, and it is the driving force behind a revamp to the company's member websites. The updates will better help members to understand their health insurance benefits, thus guiding them to become more engaged in their health care.

The changes to the member websites include new "Claims" and "Spending" tabs prominently positioned atop the homepage. These tabs will make it easier for members to track their claims and stay up to date on their balances for various spending accounts, including Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA).

"If you want people to get the most out of their health insurance coverage and be more active participants in their health care, you have to make it easier for them to understand what it all means," said Highmark executive Steven Nelson. "In fact, making health care understandable is a tenet of Highmark's mission, and that starts with helping people make sense of their benefits plans. That includes claims, progress to date on their deductibles and, if they have a spending account, knowing their balance on those accounts."

"The member website should not add another layer to people's confusion; rather, it should be a tool that helps clear up confusion, a tool that empowers them," added Nelson. "People should be able to turn to their member websites with confidence, and we believe these changes allow them to do that."

Realizing that modern consumers are as likely to check websites from their phones or tablets as they are from their desktops or laptops, Highmark's new Claims and Spending tabs feature a responsive, mobile-friendly design that enables members to use them anytime, anywhere, from any device. A prime example of that mobile functionality: Members with spending accounts that require them to submit receipts can take pictures of the receipts and then upload them directly from their smartphones, simplifying that process.

Other features of the new Claims tab include personalized messages and reminders about preventive care, the status of a claim or outstanding payments as well as the ability to access past statements. With the Spending tab, members can enter and pay claims — directly from their computer, tablet or smartphone.

"These new tabs really allow for one-stop shopping for our members," said Nelson. "They can manage their medical and pharmacy benefits plus Blue-branded dental and vision benefits. Members can check claims, submit claims and at any time of day, see where they are to date on their deductibles and out-of-pockets expenses. We believe this new web experience will revolutionize how our members view the member websites. And by helping to make health insurance more understandable, it will provide them the knowledge they need to be smarter health care consumers."
