Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield Of New Jersey Receives Award For Services To New Jersey’s Hispanic Community
February 20, 2013
NEWARK – There is a known link between access to quality health care and quality of life, and removing language barriers to health information and services ensures that all communities can receive quality services. In recognition of its commitment to supporting culturally relevant health education and information programs for New Jersey’s Hispanic community, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) has been awarded the 2012 Corporate Award by Save Latin America (SLA).
“Horizon BCBSNJ is honored to be recognized for the work we’ve done to help New Jerseyans manage their health and wellness and to bring health services to the communities we serve,” said Peter Morey, Director of Product Innovation and Marketing, Horizon BCBSNJ. “Language and economic barriers can impede access to care, and we are working to help break down these obstacles through culturally-relevant company initiatives and community-based programs and services.”
Based in Union City, SLA is a civic, non-profit organization dedicated to providing the Hispanic community with better access to information and opportunities in the areas of health, Immigration, housing and education.
In 2012, Horizon BCBSNJ created Tu Seguro Azul, a special outreach program that established a dedicated bilingual service team, a Spanish-language website and community-based activities to deliver health and wellness information to Spanish-speaking New Jerseyans.
Through The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, Horizon BCBSNJ has supported Save Latin America’s Asthma and Health Outreach and Education Initiative that provides semi-monthly screenings and home visits for asthmatic children in Hudson and Essex counties.
The Foundation has also recently launched the second phase of its Health Center Initiative, a $2 million program to support 13 nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Centers, free/volunteer clinics and independent clinics in New Jersey where the uninsured and under-insured can receive quality care services.
The SLA honored Horizon BCBSNJ with its Corporate Award at the Los Tres Proceres Antillanos Award Gala on January 25, 2013. Since 1997, Save Latin America has presented the “Los Tres Proceres Antillanos Award” to prominent men and women of Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban heritage who honor their roots and follow in the footsteps of “Los Tres Proceres”: Eugenio Maria de Hostos, Juan Pablo Duarte, and Jose Marti.
