July 2, 2012
BIRMINGHAM – The National Business Group on Health, a non-profit association of large employers, honored Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama for its commitment to promoting a healthy workplace and encouraging workers and families to maintain healthy lifestyles.
Blue Cross was among 66 employers that received the 2012 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award at the Leadership Summit sponsored by the National Business Group on Health’s Institute on Innovation in Workforce Well-being. Blue Cross received a Gold Award for its BeHealthy wellness program. This marks the fourth year Blue Cross has received an award.
“We are proud to be recognized for our company’s dedication to help support and improve our employees’ health and well-being,” said Terry Kellogg, President and CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. “This award validates our wellness team’s success with informing and implementing healthy lifestyle programs.”
Helen Darling, President and CEO of the National Business Group on Health, commented: "With health care benefit costs continuing to rise at unacceptable levels, more and more employers are focusing on health improvement programs at the workplace – and with good reason. One of the keys to controlling costs is to keep employees and their families healthy. All of the employers we are recognizing this year are fully committed to offering innovative workplace programs that encourage employees and their families to take control of their health and live healthier lifestyles."
Winners of the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles awards were honored in one of two categories: Platinum, for established workplace well-being programs with measurable success and documented outcomes; and Gold, for creating cultural and environmental changes and developing comprehensive programs that support employees’ healthy lifestyle goals.
