New Chief Medical Officer Named for Horizon NJ Health

August 2, 2013

NEWARK, N.J. – Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey announced today that Dr. Mark Calderon will assume the position of Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Horizon NJ Health, the state’s largest Medicaid and NJFamilyCare managed health care organization.

Dr. Calderon has more than thirteen years of experience as a physician executive working for three national, public health care enterprises, where he provided programs and specialty services to individuals receiving benefits under Medicaid.

Most recently, Dr. Calderon served as the Executive Medical Director of Quality Management for Horizon BCBSNJ. In this position, he administered and provided clinical direction and leadership to Horizon BCBSNJ’s continuous quality improvement program in the commercial and Medicare market.

“Under Dr. Calderon's leadership of the Clinical Quality Team, Horizon BCBSNJ has raised the standards of care quality that providers must meet in serving our 3.7 million members," said Kevin Conlin, Executive Vice President, Healthcare Management, Horizon BCBSNJ. “His insight and commitment to patient care will be invaluable as we advance our Managed Long Term Care Support Services and expand our Medicaid business lines.”

Dr. Calderon replaces Dr. Philip Bonaparte, who served as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer since 2002. Dr. Bonaparte retired to fulfill his dream of focusing fulltime on his ministry at the New Hope Church of God.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Calderon to the Horizon NJ Health team,” said Karen L. Clark, President of Horizon NJ Health. “Given his strong leadership and deep understanding of New Jersey’s Medicaid environment, I am confident Dr. Calderon will be successful in his new role as Chief Medical Officer.”

Dr. Calderon is a board certified family physician and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Calderon received his bachelor’s degree from Pace University prior to entering medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry – Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in 1986. He completed his medical internship and residency at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two children.
