October 10, 2012
HARRISBURG – Anyone looking for information and fun activities to improve their health as well as the health of their pet should plan on attending Healthy Pet, Healthy You on the grounds of Capital BlueCross, 2500 Elmerton Ave. in Harrisburg, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Brought to the community by Capital BlueCross and the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Healthy Pet, Healthy You is a free community education event focused on healthy living for people and their pets, featuring approximately 80 exhibitors.
The day will consist of activities, demonstrations and information to help keep family members (both two-legged and four-legged) healthy and living well. Low-cost health screenings and flu shots will be available along with nutritional and stress management information. There will also be a number of fitness and canine demonstrations, and local merchants will be showcasing mums, pumpkins and delicious food. Children can enjoy a number of free activities including a bounce house, face painting, crafts and balloon animals.
A low-cost vaccine and microchip clinic will also be held for pets. Anyone looking to adopt a four-legged family member will have plenty of options thanks to the Humane Society and 10 other rescue organizations that will be on hand.
Attendees are encouraged to participate in the health walk and pet parade at 1 p.m. ($5 participant fee benefits the Humane Society). Serving as this year’s parade grand marshal will be WHTM TV-27 anchor, Alicia Richards and her dog, Lily. In the spirit of the season, attendees are invited to outfit their pets for the pet costume contest at 1:30 p.m.
“Offering a free health fair is an enjoyable and interactive way Capital BlueCross can demonstrate its commitment to improving the health and wellness of our communities,” said Stacy Balaban of Capital BlueCross, who is coordinating the event. “At the same time, we recognize the tremendous health benefits pets provide to us, by reducing stress and making us laugh. That’s why we encourage all family members and their pets to participate in this fun-filled event.”
Healthy Pet, Healthy You will be held rain or shine. Attendees are asked to register upon arrival. Goody bags will be provided to each family at registration.
