SC BlueCross’ Chief Medical Officer Named An ‘Influential Woman In Business’
August 22, 2013
COLUMBIA – Columbia Regional Business Report honored Dr. Laura Long as one of the region’s “Influential Women in Business” at an event today.
Candidates were judged on several criteria: career overview, professional accomplishments and awards, and community involvement and mentoring.
Long is BlueCross’ chief medical officer and vice president for clinical innovation. In the nearly 25 years she has been in South Carolina, she has worked for the James F. Byrnes Center for Geriatric Medicine, Education and Research, where she directed the clinic; the S.C. Department of Mental Health, where she managed its seven-hospital system; BlueChoice® HealthPlan of South Carolina, where she oversaw health services; and BlueCross, where she has led the company’s drive to establish new models in health care with physicians and hospitals in South Carolina.
While Long’s busy work schedule takes her across the state and garners invitations to address national conferences, she also volunteers with many organizations. Her curriculum vitae lists 14 community, statewide and national organizations in which she has volunteered at high levels, usually for multiple years in each case.
“Dr. Long views her professional career and her volunteer leadership as fulfilling her passion to bring quality health care to the citizens of South Carolina,” said BlueCross President Jim Deyling. “Her efforts have been influential in advancing health care in the state. We congratulate her for this well-deserved external recognition.”
“Columbia is fortunate to have so many women, like Dr. Laura Long, doing such great work that is impacting our community in so many ways. It was truly an honor to recognize Dr. Long and all of our winners today,” said Bob Bouyea, publisher of the Columbia Regional Business Report.
The honorees will be profiled in the Sept. 2 edition of the Columbia Regional Business Report (www.ColumbiaRegionalBusinessReport.com).
