SC BlueCross Disease Management Programs Earn National Accreditation

COLUMBIA – URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry, has reaccredited BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina’s disease management programs.
The company earned the Disease Management 4.0 reaccreditation.
In the programs, BlueCross members diagnosed with or considered at risk for certain conditions receive materials and health coaching by telephone to help them understand their diseases and better manage their health. Participants also may contact their health coaches as often as needed for support.
“URAC’s disease management measures align with national quality improvement efforts and ensure consistency in measurement nationwide,” said Mary Mazzola Spivey, senior vice president for managed care and population health. “To have an impartial, premier accrediting organization such as URAC conclude that we are consistent with national standards is a mark of excellence.”
URAC this year announced standards revisions and the addition of performance measures for its disease management accreditation program. It aligns with current trends in the industry as well as with government regulations that include the Affordable Care Act.

The reaccreditation is effective for three years. The standards cover program scope and objectives, staff structure and qualifications, quality improvement, performance reporting, consumer rights and responsibilities, information management, ethics and more. In all, more than 50 standards must be met.
