SC BlueCross Hosting National Walk@Lunch Day Events in 3 Cities
March 27, 2013
COLUMBIA – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina will sponsor three public events in observance of National Walk@Lunch Day.
A community walk will be held April 25 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the S.C. Statehouse in Columbia. Community walks will also be held April 26 in Greenville and Charleston. Both walks will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Greenville event will be held at Falls Park. Charleston’s walk will be at Marion Square.
“We’re encouraging everyone who works near these sites to participate by wearing comfortable shoes to work and walking for at least 30 minutes during lunch,” said Dr. Laura Long, BlueCross’ vice president of clinical innovation and population health. “Walking during a lunch break is a great way for all of us to make time for exercise as we juggle work and other commitments that demand so much of our time.”
Long said regular moderate exercise, such as brisk walks, can have significant health benefits. Exercise can help people manage weight, strengthen muscles, reduce stress, and lower their risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
“National Walk@Lunch Day can mark the start of a commitment to walk every day,” she said. “Most of our schedules are built around the workday, so lunchtime walks are designed to fit into — not compete with — our daily routines.”
Businesses and schools across the nation organize lunchtime walks for employees and students to mark National Walk@Lunch Day. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina will provide free planning guides and print-ready files for banners, fliers and other promotional materials to help any South Carolina company organize a workplace walk.
