Thousands Join National Walk@Lunch Day In South Carolina
April 25, 2014
COLUMBIA – A few thousand South Carolinians laced up their comfortable shoes for National Walk@Lunch Day, trekking about 1,500 miles in three community walks hosted in Columbia yesterday and Charleston and Greenville today by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.
In addition, companies across the state joined the challenge and encouraged their employees to walk in their work sites.
Moderate exercise, such as brisk walks, taken on a regular basis five times a week, can have health benefits such as managing weight; reducing stress, cholesterol and blood pressure; and lowering the risk of heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.
Since most people’s schedules are built around their workdays, walking at lunch may be the best solution for regular fitness activity because it fits into – rather than competes with – people’s daily routine.
The Walk@Lunch events took place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. around the Statehouse in Columbia yesterday and in Marion Square in Charleston and Falls Park in Greenville today. Altogether, in the community walks, 2,000 participants logged in about 1,500 miles.
The annual Walk@Lunch observance is hosted by BlueCross companies nationwide.
