Nearly 45,000 volunteer hours were completed by Wellmark employees in 2013

DES MOINES – As part of continued expression of community involvement and corporate social responsibility, Wellmark is proud to honor our employees who selflessly dedicated their time to nonprofit causes and community events again in 2013 through the BluesCare GivingSM Program. Cumulatively, nearly 45,000 volunteer hours were logged. The Wellmark Foundation, through matching gifts and recognition grants of Wellmark employee volunteer time, gave over $1.8 million. This represents the third consecutive program year of over 40,000 volunteer hours and the program has logged more than 130,000 since becoming a signature program of The Wellmark Foundation in 2011.
“Our employees are dedicated to ensuring members in Iowa and South Dakota have access to the health care they need,” said John Forsyth, Wellmark chairman and chief executive officer. “These same employees give their time, talents and financial contributions to the causes they are passionate about. I am extremely proud to work with such a committed group of people.”
Under the BluesCare Giving Program, Wellmark offers employees the opportunity to have their personal gifts to nonprofit organizations matched, and also provides the ability to make gift designations to nonprofits of their choice through their personal volunteer efforts. The Wellmark Foundation provides funding for the matching gifts and recognition of volunteer time.
Iowa and South Dakota are ranked fifth and seventh respectively in percentage of the population that volunteers according to Volunteering in America and the Corporation of National & Community Service http://www.volunteeringinamerica.gov/rankings.cfm. The BluesCare Giving Program participation exemplifies this volunteer spirit. Wellmark employees volunteered with diverse nonprofits throughout Iowa and South Dakota and provided financial support to more than 600 different nonprofit organizations in 2013. The program now has nearly three of every four Wellmark employees across Iowa and South Dakota participating in some facet of the initiative.
“Our employees are a vital part in supporting our local communities, and it just makes sense for them to dedicate their energy and passion with nonprofits that are most meaningful to them and their families,” said Forsyth. “We’re extraordinarily proud of BluesCare Giving. It is an incredibly unique program that allows for many varied and positive ways that our employee base brings a vision of corporate social responsibility to life.”
