My Pharmacy Manager Helps Members Make More Informed Decisions on Prescriptions and Lower Costs

With rising prescription drug costs and an increasing number of new drugs in the market, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina (BCBSSC) developed a personalized tool to help their members research their prescription drug choices and save money. My Pharmacy Manager integrates more than 1,000 different benefit plans for more than 700,000 members to provide a highly customized, easy to use solution to help members make better, more informed decisions about their prescription drugs.
Program Elements
- The program provides member-specific pharmacy information through a confidential, convenient and user-friendly Website.
- Review their personal prescription drug history,
- Search through the Preferred Drug List and explore therapeutic alternatives for their current medications,
- Access cost-comparison data of various medications, including total costs and out-of-pocket based on their pharmacy benefits,
- Obtain up-to-date information about their drug benefits, and
- Request mail-order refills.
- Members can also review a directory of participating pharmacies, locate a participating pharmacy anywhere in the United States and get helpful drug facts.
- Because it is fully integrated into BCBSSC's award-winning Web portal, My Insurance ManagerSM, members have a "one stop shop" for medical, dental and prescription claims information.
Program Results
- Generic drug usage for members who used My Pharmacy Manager improved by 12 percent during 2003, compared to 1 percent for members who did not use My Pharmacy Manager.
- Call volumes related to preferred drug alternatives decreased by 50 percent during the first quarter after launch.
- These outcomes indicate that My Pharmacy Manager may play a large role in moving BCBSSC members to more satisfying, cost-conscious drug choices without compromising quality of care.
