BCBSA Commends Senate Passage Of Children’s Health Reauthorization
January 29, 2009
WASHINGTON – Scott P. Serota, president and chief executive officer of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), released the following statement on the Senate passage of the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009:
"We applaud the Senate for taking decisive action today to ensure that children have access to quality healthcare regardless of income.
"Since its inception in 1997, the Children's Health Insurance Program has helped improve the health and well-being of millions of American children. Many of the independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies, working with states to cover roughly one-third of enrollees, have been a critical component of the public-private partnerships at the core of this success.
“Despite this success, millions of eligible children still lack health insurance. This legislation will protect those children already enrolled in CHIP and make an estimated additional 4 million eligible.”
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association is a national federation of 39 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies that collectively provide healthcare coverage for nearly 100 million members - one-in-three Americans.
