BCBSA Congratulates President Obama
January 20, 2009
WASHINGTON – Scott P. Serota, president and chief executive officer of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), released the following statement on the swearing-in of President Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States:
"As an American, and especially a Chicagoan, I was honored to be a witness to history today when Barack Obama was sworn-in as our nation's new president on the U.S. Capitol steps. With the world watching, Americans came together in record numbers regardless of political affiliation and ideology.
"It's with that same spirit that we must join together to address our nation's critical domestic challenges such as jumpstarting the economy and increasing access to quality, affordable healthcare.
"That's why the president's ambitious goals of improving healthcare are a goal of BCBSA and the 39 Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies as well.
"We look forward to joining President Obama, his administration and Congress to address these problems. Only by working together can we work to expand coverage and rein in costs for everyone.
"That hard work has already begun and will continue. But today is a day of celebration for many Americans. Congratulations, Mr. President."
