BCBSA Statement On HHS National Summit On Health Care Fraud
January 28, 2010
WASHINGTON – The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) issued the following statement regarding today's U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Summit on Health Care Fraud:
"Healthcare fraud is a serious crime and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association commends Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General Eric Holder for convening today's summit to bring together private sector stakeholders, law enforcement personnel, Medicare beneficiaries, providers and other healthcare experts to combat healthcare fraud.
"The Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies nationwide are aggressive in their efforts to root out fraud and educate and protect consumers and Blue companies' anti-fraud investigations resulted in overall savings and recoveries of nearly $350 million in 2008. Several Blue companies were invited to participate in today's summit and the increased sharing of information between the public and private sector is key to helping prevent fraud and enforce anti-fraud laws nationwide.
"We look forward to working with the Obama administration and others in the fight against this expensive crime that compromises healthcare affordability."
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association is a national federation of 39 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies that collectively provide healthcare coverage for nearly 100 million members - one-in-three Americans.
