Childhood Obesity and Diabetes
Please join the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies for a media briefing and launch of a new national program that draws upon proven tools to provide pediatricians, who are uniquely positioned to influence family health, with the resources to help reduce childhood obesity and diabetes in communities across the country.
BCBSA will announce the launch of the Good Health ClubSM Physician Toolkit—a set of unique educational materials designed to foster better communication between pediatricians and their patients on childhood obesity and diabetes prevention.
BCBSA will also give an overview of survey results from physicians who used the pilot physician toolkit and release a new compendium of Blue Plan obesity and diabetes initiatives called “Commitment to the Next Generation of Healthy Americans.” Samples of the new physician toolkits will also be unveiled.
Diabetes now affects nearly 24 million people in the United States, an increase of more than 3 million in approximately two years. According to the CDC, the prevalence of obesity among children ages 6 to 11 has more than doubled in the past 20 years.
The media briefing will be webcast live beginning at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on June 9, 2010. An archived recording of the event also will be featured on BCBS.com for future viewing.
