John M. Pickering

Mr. Pickering is a principal and consulting actuary with the Seattle office of Milliman. He has more than 10 years of healthcare actuarial experience, both with Milliman and as director of health care economics for a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan.

Mr. Pickering assists clients with a variety of actuarial projects, many focused on provider network and delivery system analytics. Examples of solutions that he has delivered for clients include provider contract analysis tools -- enabling the client to accurately and efficiently evaluate the financial impacts of various contractual provisions; provider network unit cost reporting and projection -- enabling the client to consistently track contracting performance relative to a target, understand the impact of specific negotiations, and incorporate appropriate premium rate adjustments in a timely manner.

Mr. Pickering also has delivered for clients underwriting approaches and premium rate development; provider benchmarking and comparison tools -- enabling the identification of contract improvement opportunities; experience analysis and reporting; Medicare Advantage bids and strategies; and financial evaluation of disease management programs and the associated return on investment.

Mr. Pickering is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a Society of Actuaries Fellow.

He received his B.S. in Mathematics from Central Washington University and a B.A. in Communications from University of Washington.
