Blue Cross and Blue Shield Companies and Generic Drugs

A Proven Way to Enhance Quality and Value

Please join the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and key consumer and business leaders for a media briefing. BCBSA will release data from its new 2008 Generic Drug Survey and highlight how innovative community-based awareness programs are helping consumers get better quality and value for their healthcare dollars.

At a time when American consumers and businesses are under pressure from the rising cost of healthcare, the use of generic prescription drugs can save money while increasing health benefits. Use of safe and effective generic drugs leads to better health outcomes by increasing medical adherence to drug therapies.

The survey tracks generic drug use by more than 51 million subscribers of 32 Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies.

BCBSA will be joined by representatives of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Birds Eye Foods, Inc., and the Consumers Union, to highlight how generic drugs, which are the commercial equivalent of name-brand drugs at a fraction of the cost, can be a powerful tool to lower healthcare costs.

The media briefing will be recorded and featured on this Web page at 12:00 p.m. (EDT) on April 9, 2009.
