Wilmington, DE – In response to the increasing number of Delawareans without access to affordable heath insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware (BCBSD) has expanded its health benefits options for individuals under 65. The product, BlueIndividual, responds to the needs of those who currently are not covered by an employer's health insurance plan — such as individuals who are recent graduates, between jobs, part-time workers, early retirees or those whose employers do not offer group health coverage.

The number of uninsured Delawareans increased to 105,000 for the 2004-2006 period, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, up from 95,000 for the three years ending in 2005. This number represents 12.7 percent of Delaware's population.

BlueIndividual plans offer some affordable solutions for those individuals without coverage. The portfolio provides three plan types, each including options compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) — accounts that allow consumers to save for health care costs in a tax-advantaged account. By accessing the company's website, bcbsde.com, consumers can view all of the BlueIndividual options and use a personalized tool to help select the product that best meets their needs.

"We created BlueIndividual products to meet the needs of those without access to our group health benefits plans," said Christine L. Alrich, Vice President of Corporate Marketing. "Since the launch, we have seen a strong response to these products and believe we are filling a gap in the marketplace."

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. In its 72nd year of service, BCBSD offers a comprehensive portfolio of health benefits products to more than 385,000 customers. BCBSD is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. More information about BCBSD is available at bcbsde.com.
