Newark, NJ - Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (BCBSNJ) announced today that it received the “Best initiative engaging consumers in the health decision-making process,” award at the Consumer Health World Conference in Washington D.C. on December 12, 2006.

Consumer Health World is the nation's #1 business-to-business conference on consumer health.

Horizon Health Rewards is an innovative program that allows consumers to take greater responsibility for their health care decisions, become better educated health care consumers, and improve their health.

The program rewards consumers with incentives for completing health and wellness activities.  Consumers earn points that are deposited into an online personalized rewards account in which the points can be redeemed for gift cards from hundreds of the nation's leading retailers as well as merchandise, travel packages and more. 

Horizon Health Rewards is integrated into "My Health Manager," Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey's online personalized health resource, which is powered by WebMD.  In addition to the benefits to consumers, employers also significantly gain from this flexible and customizable solution by having a healthier workforce and reduced health care costs.

A sample of activities that consumers can earn points for with Horizon Health Rewards include:

  • Completing the Health Assessment Tool
  • Researching health conditions
  • Using health care cost calculators
  • Comparing hospital quality ratings
  • Reading health articles

Consumers can access these activities 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any computer with internet access.
