Regence welcomes Dr. Amy Khan as executive medical director

SALT LAKE CITY – Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah has named Dr. Amy J. Khan as its executive medical director. She will lead statewide medical cost and quality stewardship activities for the health plan in Utah, as well as for Regence BlueShield of Idaho. By driving strategic alignment with local health care providers in service to Regence members, Khan will further the company’s mission to make care simpler, better and more affordable.

“As a highly experienced leader dedicated to improving outcomes for individuals and their families, Dr. Khan will be a great asset to our members and our team,” said Dr. Drew Oliveira, senior executive medical director at Regence BlueShield. “She has a wealth of experience around primary care and population health that will help people in Utah and Idaho achieve better health.”

At Regence, Khan will have a key leadership role in working directly with network providers to drive closer coordination of patient care. Serving previously in medical directorship roles with Aetna, McKesson, Dignity Health and The Permanente Medical Group, Khan offers a unique combination of health care provider group experience and health plan expertise.

“Dr. Khan brings a deep clinical knowledge and extensive experience in medical management to our health plan,” said Jim Swayze, president of Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah. “As an advocate for maximizing value-based care, she will help lead our cause of making health care more accessible and affordable across our state.”

As executive medical director, Khan will draw on her three-decades of experience in health care, specifically in population health management, person-focused care management, and developing high-performance provider networks. Her clinical experience includes internal medicine, addiction medicine and medical epidemiology with a focus on chronic disease control and prevention.

“What drives me as a physician is my passion for helping people to be all that they can be,” said Dr. Amy Khan, executive medical director at Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah and Regence BlueShield of Idaho. “I’m joining Regence with the goal of doing everything I can to ensure that our team and providers work effectively to deliver an optimal health care experience for our members and health plan sponsors.”
Khan received her Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. She completed her internal medicine residency at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Santa Clara, Calif., and her public health and general preventive medicine residency at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, where she also completed a tour with the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service.
