Mitch Helfand

Mitch Helfand is vice president of Finance for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), a national federation of 36 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. The Blue System is the nation's largest health insurer covering one-in-three of all Americans. It is the largest single processor of Medicare claims in the nation, and holds the world's largest privately underwritten health insurance contract – the 5.4 million-member Federal Employee Program (FEP).

From 1991 to 1999, Helfand served as chief auditor and compliance officer of BCBSA. He has also served as executive director of the BCBSA National Employee Benefits Programs providing retirement and other employee benefit programs that cover over 80,000 participants who are employees of Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. Helfand is an officer of General Partner and an administrator of two Blue Cross Blue Shield venture funds. Helfand is a board member of BluePac, a political action committee in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining BCBSA, Helfand was a senior manager in the audit practice of Deloitte.

Helfand is a certified public accountant. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.
