Chief Medical Officer and Vice President for Clinical Innovation
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina
Shawn Stinson, M.D. serves as the chief medical officer and vice president for clinical innovation for BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. Until December of 2014, he was the chief quality & patient safety officer of Palmetto Health, the largest integrated healthcare system in South Carolina. In addition, he continues to serve as a clinical associate professor of medicine with the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine.
Stinson attended the Duke University School of Medicine, after completing his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His internship and residency training was undertaken at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Internal Medicine. He began his career as assistant chief of the medical service at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1991 and advanced to assistant professor of medicine before coming to the University of South Carolina School Of Medicine in 1995.
Stinson was honored in March 2011 with The Lewis W. Blackman Award for a SC Healthcare Executive. Shawn received the O’Neill Barrett Teaching Excellence Award from the USC School of Medicine in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002. He was named Faculty Member of the Year at the USC School of Medicine for the classes of 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003. In 2000 he was awarded the Humanism in Medicine Award from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. Stinson also received the George J. Stuart Award for outstanding clinical teaching at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1995.
Stinson serves on the Quality Advisory Council of the South Carolina Hospital Association. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and is board-certified in Internal Medicine. He continues to work part time in clinical medicine as a hospitalist.
Stinson is a native of Greensboro, N.C. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and his medical education at Duke University School of Medicine. Post-graduate training was at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
