Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) is responding to the COVID-19 crisis by ensuring its employees are supported and members, providers and others across Nebraska are cared for.

In the wake of the pandemic that hit the nation in 2020, BCBSNE's two community relief focus areas have been covering basic needs, including food and safety for its most vulnerable citizens, and supporting frontline healthcare workers:

  • BCBSNE has donated $20,000 to the Open Door Mission, which is serving even more homeless families and children during the crisis, as well as providing food to families in need. Along with the monetary donation, BCBSNE employees were encouraged to send inspirational cards to guests at the mission. BCBSNE also sent snacks and creative activities to entertain children quarantined at the mission.
  • BCBSNE has also provided nourishment and encouragement to the employees of area hospitals and health departments, as well as the National Guard. Over 3,000 meals have been provided directly by BCBSNE and in conjunction with The Salvation Army. The company also launched a statewide campaign (#TrueBlueHeroes) to publicly recognize all frontline workers and spur other community partners and individuals to do the same.
  • BCBSNE is responding to the need to help provide and encourage the use of face coverings to the most vulnerable citizens of Omaha and Grand Island who might not otherwise have access to make or procure them, in partnership with Metro Omaha Medical Society, Heartland United Way and others. They are helping arm a mighty team of Omahans to sew, and will ultimately distribute over 55,000 masks, accompanied by multilingual wear and washing instructions.
  • BCBSNE also encouraged support from their employees by conducting a 24-hour gift matching campaign (Omaha Gives) to help support local non-profits and organizations.
