Annual cycling program promote healthier lifestyles through cycling

Burlington, VT – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont (BCBSVT) and Terry Bicycles (Terry) are teaming up again to launch Wellness Revolution, a program designed to promote healthier lifestyles for Vermont women through cycling. Registration for the five-week program begins on March 18 and ends on April 5. Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We’re pleased to continue our partnership with Terry Bicycles to provide access to health and wellness through bicycling,” says Megan Peek, director of community relations and health education at BCBSVT. “No matter how long it’s been since they’ve ridden, we help program participants learn all aspects of cycling, from basic bike maintenance and repairs to safety and mindfulness.”

Terry CEO, Liz Robert adds, “Our Mission at Terry is to get more women on bicycles because we know it is life changing. Unlike so many cycling brands who focus on the athlete, we focus on the everywoman who is looking to feel comfortable and confident on a bike. We are so fortunate to have BCBSVT as a partner in the Wellness space to support such a comprehensive and effective program.”
Bethany Yon, a 2018 Wellness Revolution participant, hadn’t been on a bike in more than 25 years when she started. “You know that old adage, ‘it’s like riding a bike?’ Well, not for me,” she says. “I was close to walking away because I was so intimidated.” Program instructors made all the difference, though, breaking down each part of riding—from how to kick off to when to shift gears—until every woman felt confident enough to ride on the road. Bethany described the group’s final 11-mile road ride as “a game changer,” and now considers biking part of her regular exercise.

Two groups of 30 women will meet separately on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program kicks off on April 16 and 18 with an informational and goal-setting session at Old Spokes Home in Burlington. All weekday sessions are from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The program will culminate on May 18 with a team ride including both groups as well as program alumni.

Additional highlights of this free program include sessions on bike maintenance, mindfulness, urban riding techniques, cross training and more. Incentives include free helmets, a $75 Terry gift card and the chance to win a Terry bike.
