Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Statement Regarding Congressional Passage of COVID-19 Response Legislation

WASHINGTON – Today, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association President and CEO Scott P. Serota issued the following statement on legislation providing COVID-19 emergency relief.

“We applaud the bipartisan leaders of Congress for supporting Americans’ health care needs at this extraordinary time by providing critical, direct aid to our hospitals and clinicians who are on the front lines of the effort to serve patients during this outbreak. Nothing is more critical than making sure people can get the care they need, when they need it, and bolstering our health care system as it confronts unprecedented demands is paramount.

Today’s legislative package is also an important step in supporting employers and their workers during this crisis. As lawmakers and the administration continue to work on responses to the COVID-19 outbreak, we believe additional support is needed for businesses and individuals to maintain health insurance coverage. Offering such support, including appropriate financial assistance, will provide security and comfort to millions at this time of great need.

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues, we will continue to work with our partners across the health care industry, with the administration and lawmakers in both parties, to support Americans’ health, safety and well-being.”
