BlueCross BlueShield Announces Expansion Of Corporate Leadership Team

Buffalo, NY – BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York today announced multiple promotions to broaden its corporate leadership team. 

The professionals who have been promoted are Adam Dunning to Vice President, Analytics; Jennifer Johengen-Vogel to Vice President, Health Management; Russell Matuszak to Vice President, Compliance, Privacy and Ethics, Chief Compliance Officer; Scott Morris to Vice President, Chief Information Security Officer; and Paul Valley to Vice President, Strategic Accounts and Specialty Products.  

Adam Dunning, Vice President, Analytics 

Reporting to Senior Vice President, Enterprise Initiatives and Analytics, Jared Gross, Dunning will oversee all analytic functions, focusing on new strategies to enhance the use of analytics throughout the organization.

Additionally, he will lead the company’s clinical and advanced analytics, business intelligence, and self-service analytic strategies.

To better align with the company’s strategic focus, Information and Analytical Advancement, and Operational Metrics and Optimization will now be part of Dunning’s organization, in addition to health care economics. 

Dunning joined BlueCross BlueShield in July 2016 as director, health care economics. He previously served as senior vice president, chief information officer for Palladian Health. 

A certified project management professional, Dunning earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and management information systems from the University at Buffalo. He serves on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Elma, Marilla & Wales.

Jennifer Johengen-Vogel, Vice President, Health Management 

jennifer johengen-vogelReporting to Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Thomas Schenk, Vogel will be responsible for developing and supporting the company’s health management strategy to improve health outcomes.  

She will assume strategic oversight of clinical program development and innovation, and partnerships with key clinical vendors and utilization management vendors.  

Vogel joined BlueCross BlueShield in June 2009 and most recently served as senior director, health management. She previously served in leading positions at Horizon Health Services and Independent Health. 

A registered nurse and certified case manager, Vogel earned a master’s degree in psychiatric mental health nursing, and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University at Buffalo. 

She is a class of 2012 Leadership Buffalo graduate and a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. 

She serves on the executive board of the Buffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Network, Inc., and is chair of its Sustainability Committee. Vogel also serves on the board of directors for Horizon Health Services and the American Diabetes Association of Western New York.

Russell Matuszak, Vice President, Compliance, Privacy and Ethics, Chief Compliance Officer

russell matusekReporting to Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Ken Sodaro, Matuszak will establish, maintain, and oversee an effective compliance, privacy, and ethics program for the company that is consistent with regulatory requirements, strives for best practice, and aligns with the company’s core values.

He is also responsible for establishing standards and implementing procedures to ensure that company compliance programs are effective and efficient in identifying, preventing, detecting, and correcting noncompliance with applicable rules and regulations.  

Matuszak joined BlueCross BlueShield in November 2005 as legal counsel. He most recently served as senior director, chief compliance and privacy officer. 

He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University at Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Canisius College. 

He serves on the board of directors for the Niagara Frontier Corporate Counsel Association. Matuszak is a class of 2009 Leadership Buffalo graduate and is an adjunct accounting professor for Canisius College.

Scott Morris, Vice President, Chief Information Security Officer 

scott morrisReporting to Senior Vice President, Operations, Christopher Leardini, Morris will strategically lead the enterprise information assurance teams, supporting information and cybersecurity in establishing and maintaining an enterprise-wide information assurance program to ensure data protection.  

He joined BlueCross BlueShield in 2009 and most recently served as director, chief information security officer. Previously he served in a variety of information security roles at HP Enterprise Services. 

Viewed as an industry leader in the field, Morris earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Buffalo State. He is a certified informational systems security professional and certified information security manager. 

In addition to his involvement with the BlueCross BlueShield Association information security groups, he is a board member for both IBM Security and the National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

Paul Valley, Vice President, Strategic Accounts and Specialty Products 

paul valleyReporting to Senior Vice President, Chief Sales Officer, Dave Busch, Valley will be responsible for driving the company’s sales strategy, growth, and retention. He will oversee the company’s commercial accounts, external labor relations, and pharmacy benefit sales, in addition to a large scope of complex products, accounts, and external business relationships.

Valley advanced through a variety of positions in operations and sales. He joined the company in 1998 as supervisor, customer service before being promoted to manager and then director of customer service. Valley also served as director, enrollment and billing before transitioning to sales as senior account executive. 

Valley accepted a position as senior client executive at Brown & Brown of New York, Inc. in 2008, and then as employee benefits consultant at Lawley Insurance. He rejoined BlueCross BlueShield in 2012 as director, Western New York commercial accounts, and most recently served as senior director, strategic accounts and specialty products. 

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Buffalo State.
