BlueCross BlueShield Health and Wellness Experts Provide Helpful Information to Older Adults on National Senior Health and Fitness Day

Buffalo, NY- To recognize the importance of health and wellness for seniors in conjunction with today’s National Senior Health and Fitness Day, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York released a free audiocast and infographic that provides simple tips for aging actively.

Adults 65 years and older should exercise a total of 150 minutes each week, according to the World Health Organization, including:

·         Leisure time, such as  gardening, hiking and swimming

·         Transportation, such as walking and cycling

·         Occupational tasks, such as chores, community activity and physical work

In the free episode titled, “How to Age Actively,” Jennifer Johnson, BlueCross BlueShield’s Health Promotion Coordinator, suggests ways for older adults to start and maintain an exercise routine.

“Once we stop moving, it’s much harder to get started again, so it’s important to stay active as long as possible,” said Johnson, a certified fitness instructor and certified nutrition and wellness consultant specializing in senior health. “Staying or becoming active as you age can energize your mood, relieve stress, help manage symptoms of illness and pain, and improve your overall sense of well-being, and it’s never too late to start,” she added.

The new audiocast is the latest in health plan’s Point of Health series launched in December of 2016. Hosted by BlueCross BlueShield’s Vice President, Corporate Relations, Julie R. Snyder, Point of Health audiocasts are posted bi-monthly and feature interviews with experts on health insurance and health care, covering a variety of perspectives and information.
