Improving the health of America through the Power of Blue

Published July 7, 2015

Improving the health of America through the Power of BlueMore than 106 million people rely on Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies for their health insurance coverage. That’s one in three Americans, but our commitment to improving the quality of health extends to every American.

After all, we’re the people who invented the very idea of health insurance. Every day, we work to find new ways to connect members with the quality care they deserve, and help them stay healthy rather than just provide access to treatment when they’re sick.  From coast to coast, we’re working to redefine healthcare from the inside out, investing in programs that improve the health of our members, driving down healthcare costs by putting patients at the center, and emphasizing quality of care over quantity.

In 2014, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies and their foundations made nearly $400 million in charitable community investments to increase access to care, improve healthcare quality and affordability, and enable healthier living. We’re proud to release our annual Investing in America’s Health report, which details a selection of examples of these programs and investments in cities and towns across the country.

From an ice skating program that keeps kids moving during winter months, to health literacy initiatives and programs that reward primary care physicians for better health outcomes, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are addressing a vast array of issues that meet the unique needs of the local communities they serve.

The Power of Blue harnesses the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies’ deep relationships with doctors and hospitals, our breadth of innovations and longstanding community commitment to:

Enable Healthier Living – improve the health and wellness of the communities we call our own by providing a variety of resources to organizations, schools, families and individuals to help create a healthier living environment for all.

Improve Healthcare Access – partner with local community health clinics to address medically underserved areas and reach patients of all cultural and economic backgrounds.

Improve Healthcare Quality and Affordability – lead in healthcare innovations that deliver the highest quality care to all Americans.

We recognize and welcome the great responsibility that comes with our 86-year legacy as true healthcare pioneers and trusted partners to the communities we serve, not only as insurers, but as employers, business partners and neighbors.
